Say Hello to Denise
May 15, 2013
Hi Denise. Thanks for taking time to chat with us. If your friends and family are anything like mine, they probably ask you this on the reg. What is your major? Minor? And why? Those questions are usually followed up with do I plan to ever make any money and how I should have decided to be an engineer instead. Everyone’s a critic I guess.
I will give you the scoop. My major is Sociology, and my minor is Psychology. It’s funny that you ask if I plan to make any money, because that was my thought long ago when I first began my college journey. I am actually a returning UNM student. This is my first semester back to UNM since 2007. I started working on my Sociology degree over 20 years ago. I was a part-time student at that time, married, struggling for money, and unsure what a Sociology degree was going to do for me. I quit UNM and decided to use my Biology classes to my advantage. I started classes at TVI, and received my Associate in Nursing degree. That way I figured I would most likely have a steady income.
Why does attending UNM West make sense for you?
I have lived in Rio Rancho since I was 14 years old. I have seen this place really grow. I was glad to see UNM West here. It gave me incentive to go back to school to finish this degree.
What do you like most about taking classes here?
UNM West offers classes at hours that fit my schedule. The classes are smaller than those at main campus, and of course it’s close to home.
I hear that you are very close to graduating. That must be very exciting. Please talk a little about how UNM West was instrumental in helping you complete your degree? Maybe share a bit on your experience with some classes you have taken or share with us the classes you are planning to take.
I am hoping to graduate next spring. UNM West offers many upper level classes that I can take to help me on my journey to graduation. I took Sociology 371 with Marie Clevenger this semester. It was a smaller class setting, so we got a lot of class interaction. Our instructor was great! I’m planning to take some psychology classes in the fall.
Do you already have post-graduation plans? Are you lucky enough to have a job already line up? Going straight into a graduate program? If not maybe you could share with us what your dream job or career would involve.
I have a full-time job as a clinical director. When I finish this degree, I would like to get my bachelors in Nursing. Maybe in the future, I would still like to work with patients, but in a calmer setting. I could possibly use my Sociology degree and nursing background providing some type of counseling to people.
Well, well, well. You will be happy to know you can start working on your B.S. in Nursing here at UNM West in the very near future.
Pop Quiz Time. Please answer the following statements with True or False.
Parking at UNM West is always free. True!
It’s very true indeed. No permit, no worries, no problem.
UNM West offers free coffee and tea. True, but I’m a Coke Zero drinker.
Correct Again. Sorry Coke Zero drinkers you are on your own with that one.
The use of the copier and printer are free at UNM West. True.
A-ha. Only trueish. It's sort of a trick question. Copy and printing privileges are limited to 25 pages per day. After 25 pages, students are asked to pay for their extra copies at our front desk. However, we do give out a ton of free smiles daily.
Is it better to be bigger or smaller?
It is better to be smaller. I am 5’0” and I would’t have it any other way…
Agreed smaller is better. As you mentioned before our smaller class sizes at UNM West help to foster
camaraderie and an open learning environment.
Have you liked UNM West on Facebook yet? If you haven’t yet, why not? All the cool kids are doing it.
I did the Facebook thing for about 3 months, but I did not have time, and was never on it. I do support UNM West. You’re one cool campus.
Now it's time to say goodbye to all our family...M-I-C. See you real soon. K-E-Y...Why? Because we like you. Thanks Denise.
Thanks UNM West…see you real soon!
