The MaLL (Math Learning Lab) is scheduled to be in room 1221 at UNM West starting in Spring 2014. It is where Math 120 courses at UNM West will be located. Lectures will now be replaced with on task time in an online learning system. Instructors and tutors will be there to give one on one help to students, rather than a lecture format.
Class time replaced with time on task. Lectures are replaced with required time in the Math Learning Lab (MaLL). Rather than attending lecture, students will go to the MaLL to work in the online learning system ALEKS. On-demand, personalized assistance is available through the software and lab staff. Instructors and/or tutors will be available in the MaLL during open hours. Some of these hours will be for scheduled classes, and other hours will be open hours that any Math 120 student can use for extra tutoring and make up hours. See hours below.
Self-paced. The redesigned Math 120 course will allow students to test out of material they already know and move quickly through material they are familiar with. Motivated students may finish the course in less than one semester. Students who need extra time may take longer than one semester to complete the entire course.
Individualized. At the beginning of each module, students take an assessment that determines an individual learning plan. From their learning plan students choose what to focus on when they sit down to work. When they need help assistance is available through the software and lab staff. The software allows for continuous monitoring of each individual student's attendance and progress.
Mastery learning. Mastery learning establishes the same expectations for achievement for all students but allows them to reach the level of mastery at different times. This is in contrast to our current traditional model which allows achievement to vary within a classroom of students over a fixed amount of time. Students must show mastery on assessments before being allowed to access subsequent material.
Some of the hours will be for scheduled classes, and some will be open hours that math 120 students can use for extra tutoring and make up time. Call or visit the UNM West front desk for specific course meeting times in the MaLL.
