Since opening its new facility in January 2010 at Rio Rancho’s new City Center, UNM West has worked to create partnerships that will enhance educational opportunities for current and prospective students, as well as the greater Rio Rancho community. The 40,000 square foot building, located at 2600 College Blvd. NE, houses general purpose classrooms, a computer lab, a common area, quiet study space and office space, including meeting areas for community groups. Commute time to UNM West has been improved with the Paseo del Volcan connection from U.S. 550.
Currently, UNM West offers lower and upper division (100-400-level) courses leading to degree completion. Students enjoy our flexible scheduling, which includes day, evening and weekend courses. Courses are offered in the following subject areas: American Studies, Anthropology, Astronomy, Biology, Communication & Journalism, Dance, Economics, English, History, Sociology, Psychology, Sustainability, Management, Nutrition, Philosophy, Physics, Religious Studies, and Women's Studies.
It is an exciting time at the UNM West campus. With increasing enrollment, expanded course offerings, continued collaboration with area businesses, school districts, and community groups, UNM West is well prepared for the future. New UNM President, Dr. Robert G. Frank, tasked UNM West staff with development and draft of the "UNM West Academic Master Plan." A draft of the plan, which highlights areas of potential growth for the campus, was recently submitted to Dr. Frank, and included strategic planning in the areas of academics and student services.
UNM West continues to offer courses leading to degree completion in several transfer/degree completion programs including Psychology, Sociology, American Studies, Communication & Journalism, Criminology, Elementary/ Special Education Dual Licensure, Business Administration, and Liberal Arts. Expanded course offerings in Nursing, Dental Hygiene and Emergency Medical Services are set to begin soon. Further, graduate courses leading to degree completion in Education (Special Education), Business (MBA) and Public Administration are also offered at UNM West.
Community engagement is crucial to the UNM West campus. Currently, UNM West works with UNM Main Campus departments/offices, area Pueblos, Sandoval County School Districts, local businesses, the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce, Rio Rancho Economic Development Corporation, and other entities in expanding programs and services to current and prospective students in the area. In addition, the UNM West campus is available to community groups for meetings/gatherings, which many groups have utilized since the opening of the campus. Further, school groups visit UNM West frequently to experience a smaller campus, with the benefits of a large research University.
